Citigroup’s ship sank in the sea with 2,000 tons of sugar

A lighter ship of Citigroup carrying 2,000 tonnes of  sugar from Chittagong to Narayanganj sank in hostile weather. However 12 sailors of the ship are unharmed.

The ship sank off the coast near Thengarchar in Hatia upazila of Noakhali on Saturday (August 15th) morning.

Mohammad Selim, deputy director of the Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) in Chittagong, said the sinking ship MV City-14 contained 2,000 tonnes of unrefined sugar. This belongs to Sugar City Group.

He added that the ship left for Rupsha Ghat in Narayanganj at around 1.30 pm last (Friday) carrying unrefined sugar from a mother vessel located at the outer harbor of Chittagong port. On the way, the ship fell into a massive wave near Thengarchar, near Bhasanchar, down the Hatia Channel. The water enters through the hedge on the top of the ship. Then the sugar on one side melted and the ship capsized.
