Container transport at Chittagong port over 3 million.
Container transport at Chittagong port reached over 3 million. Countries Factories started to run again after the end of Corona’s effect. Imports of industrial raw materials are also increasing to keep production running. In particular, as the import of raw materials in the garment sector has increased, so has the export of manufactured goods. At the end of the day it speeds up the number of container transports.
The port of Chittagong dropped out of the list of three million or 3 million containers last year due to the corona. The port is going to set a record in container transport before the end of the year after overcoming that push. Container transport is increasing mainly on the basis of import-export trade.
According to the port, as of December 6 this year, container transport has exceeded 3 million. Therefore, at the end of the year, it is expected to surpass the previous record. Earlier, the highest container transport was in 2019. 3 million 6 thousand containers are transported through the service port. During Corona, container transport dropped by about 6 percent last year to 26 lakh 39 thousand.
When asked, Chittagong Port Chairman Rear Admiral Mohammad Shahjahan told media that container transport could increase to 3.2 million by the end of this year. The port is going to set a new record this time with the combined efforts of the port officials-employees and users.
The number of container shipments around the world is calculated from the number of import-export goods and the number of empty containers. The port authorities disclosed the total number of container shipments by adding the number of container loading and unloading at the main jetty of Chittagong port, Pangaon Naval Terminal and Kamalapur Container Depot.
Despite the increase in container traffic, the port did not have to suffer long periods of time like other developed ports in the world. After the arrival of the ship for several months, there is an opportunity to land at the jetty every day or one or two days. That means you don’t have to wait day after day to get the product. For this, the port has to take new steps in jetty management.
The increase in container transport is due to the increase in import and export. At the end of the second push of the corona, the wheel of the factory came to a standstill. Imports of industrial raw materials are also increasing to keep production running. In particular, as the import of raw materials in the garment sector has increased, so has the export of manufactured goods. At the end of the day it speeds up the number of container transports.
Syed Nazrul Islam, first vice-president of BGMEA, a garment industry organization, told press media that the growth of container transport at the port was a great reflection of the growth of the garment industry. It is also true that port services have increased in import and export of container goods as compared to the past. You don’t have to wait day after day to get the product. In order to maintain this continuity, we need to focus on speedy implementation of new projects.
According to the port, only 25 per cent of the goods imported and exported through Chittagong port are transported in containers and the rest in bulk. Although less goods are transported in containers, it is more important in terms of goods.
This is because all the raw materials of all the industries except two or three are imported in containers.
The list includes clothing, medicine, shoes, steel, commercial products, consumer goods, etc. Again almost all the exported goods are sent in containers. For all these reasons, the slowdown in the growth of container transport indicates the speed of economic activity.
In the country, 98% of the containers shipped by sea are brought and taken through Chittagong port. Due to this Chittagong port is more important.
