India has taken a significant step in strengthening its maritime sector with the registration of the crude oil tanker Lila Jamnagar, one of the largest vessels sailing under the Indian flag.
The tanker, with a capacity of 298,997 deadweight tonnage (DWT), falls under the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) category, making it a key asset in global oil transportation.
The vessel has been registered and classified by the Indian Register of Shipping, highlighting the organization’s growing capability in handling large and complex vessels.
Officials described the development as a “milestone” for India’s tanker fleet, emphasizing the country’s ambitions to expand its merchant shipping capacity and strengthen its role in global energy logistics.
“India’ drive to expand its merchant fleet and strengthen its energy transportation capabilities requires robust technical oversight and internationally recognized standards,” said P. K. Mishra, Managing Director of the Indian Register of Shipping.
He added that the classification of Lila Jamnagar demonstrates the organization’s ability to support large-scale tanker operations while contributing to the growth of India’s maritime ecosystem.
The vessel is owned by RFK Shipping and operated through Lila Global. Financing and registration were facilitated through Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, which is emerging as a major hub for maritime financing and investment.
Authorities in GIFT City noted that the successful completion of the project reflects its increasing importance in supporting large-scale maritime ventures.
The registration of Lila Jamnagar comes amid a series of major initiatives by India to become a leading global shipping nation over the next two decades. These plans include expanding the national ship registry, investing heavily in shipbuilding, and developing maritime infrastructure.
India is also planning to establish a state-backed container shipping company, Bharat Container Shipping Line, which aims to operate over 100 vessels in the future and rank among the world’s top 20 liner shipping companies.
In addition, a recently signed free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union is expected to further boost maritime trade, potentially creating one of the largest economic zones in the world, with significant opportunities for global shipping and port industries.
Industry experts believe that developments like the registration of Lila Jamnagar signal India’s growing ambition to become a major force in global maritime trade and energy transportation.
